Research

We are committed pushing the frontier of gravitational-wave astronomy across the spectrum—combining space-based LISA observations with nanohertz pulsar timing array science, developing innovative analysis techniques across these complementary observational domains, and building a comprehensive understanding of gravitational wave sources across cosmic history.

Gravitational waves are emitted at different frequencies from sources of different masses, using a variety of techniques such as ground-based interferometers, tracking of spacecraft, and the monitoring of radio pulsars.

Our research focuses on building tools and techniques to interpret data from the ESA/NASA external page Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. As hosts of the Swiss LISA external page Data Center, we are developing critical data-analysis components, including:

  • Early-alert pipelines that will enable rapid identification and notification of significant gravitational-wave events, facilitating crucial multi-messenger observations;

  • Global parameter-estimation frameworks that will extract the maximum scientific information from complex LISA data streams;

  • Comprehensive source catalogs documenting the population of compact binaries, massive black hole mergers, and extreme mass-ratio inspirals throughout cosmic history.

Pulsar timing arrays detect gravitational wave by monitoring the radio pulsations of rapidly rotating neutron stars

Our expertise extends to the fascinating frontier of nanohertz gravitational waves through our active participation in the external page North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves. Our group has made significant contributions to the recent groundbreaking detection of the external page nanohertz gravitational-wave background using pulsar timing arrays.

  • We play a key role in developing essential software tools such as external page Enterprise and external page Discovery.
  • We strive to formulate robust statistical frameworks to derive reliable and reproducible results, acknowledging both the power and limitations of our data.
